What Young George Washington Can Teach Us About Sales Leadership

Your Sales Team Doesn’t Need Another Manager. It Needs a Leader.

WOW! Today is my birthday, it’s pouring rain, there are wash outs,  power outages, and it’s the perfect day to stay inside – in sweatpants and all!

Then my 14-year-old said, “Mom, since it’s raining, I couldn’t ride my bike to the store to get you the flowers I wanted to give you for your birthday. Can I take you to a movie instead?”

I jumped at the chance to spend a few hours with him, even if it meant sitting in a dark theater where I couldn’t talk to him. And, of course, he got to pick the movie: Young Washington.

I’m more of a rom-com kind of girl, not exactly a history buff. But I have to admit, I was hooked within the first five minutes!

I won’t give away the details, but I bet you’re wondering: What does this have to do with sales leadership?

Well, the final scene of Young Washington offers a powerful lesson in leadership.

Great leaders don’t simply hold a title. They understand who they are, what they stand for, and who they serve.

And that’s where great sales leadership begins.

Building a championship sales team isn’t about hiring the person with the best résumé and handing them a quota. It’s about having the courage to recruit the right people, put them in the right roles, coach them relentlessly, hold them accountable, and build a culture where people want to win together.

The best sales leaders don’t ask, “How do I get my team to sell more?”

They ask: “What does my team need from me to become exceptional?”

They serve the mission. They serve the customer. They serve their people.

And when the team wins, they know it was never about them.

That’s leadership.

So, CEOs and Presidents, take a hard look at your sales organization: Are you leading your sales team or simply managing it?

Because revenue growth doesn’t happen by accident. It starts with leadership.
